House Extensions and Alterations

We are currently preparing the new draft Supplementary Planning Document that will provide guidance on improving the quality of house extensions and alterations.

A Supplementary Planning Document is proposed to encourage improvements in the quality of house extensions and alterations. This will provide clear guidance and set standards for different types of development including rear, side and front extensions and alterations, conservatories, porches, corner plots, roof extensions and alterations, garages and outbuildings, parking and renewable energy.

The Supplementary Planning Document will be supplementary to Policy R1D and other design policies in the Replacement Unitary Development Plan.

Preparing the Draft Supplementary Planning Document

We are in the process of preparing a Draft Supplementary Planning Document. This document will be based on the feedback we have received from key stakeholders who commented on the House Extensions and Alterations Issues and Options Paper, which highlighted a number of key issues and proposed a range of options to address such issues, with regards to house extensions and alterations.

Consultation

The consultation stage has been delayed due to changes that are taking place at national level, with the introduction of the Planning Bill (external link) on 27 November 2007.  It will be started following the bill becoming statute.
