Access for All

An accessible environment benefits everyone, especially people with disabilities, older people and families with young children. It is more cost effective and results in a more attractive design, if the environment is made accessible to all at the start rather than having to make adjustments later.

This supplementary planning document sets out the main requirements that a development proposal will need to meet to show that it will create an accessible environment. It provides detailed design guidance on how to achieve these requirements. The document is not just about buildings and car parks. It also looks at the countryside, including parks and angling.

In most instances, applicants are now required to submit a Design and Access Statement (.pdf, 39Kb) with their planning application to show that it will create an environment that is accessible to all. This supplementary planning document takes the applicant step by step through the process of preparing a Design and Access Statement.

The Access for All Supplementary Planning Document is supplementary to Policy A1C and other policies in the Replacement Unitary Development Plan.
