Cost of providing the Building Control Service 2006/2007
Our primary function is in the application of Building Regulations. In 2006/2007 we received 2550 Building Regulation applications.
We also have responsibility for:
- Inspection and advice on the safe use of premises for certain licensed purposes.
- To investigate, assess and where necessary make safe any dangerous structures.
- Ensure that private demolition is carried out safely.
- Ensure safe and economical demolition of council owned structures.
- Ensure safety of scaffolds and hoardings in public areas throughout the borough.
- Provide advice and information on Building Control related matters.
The cost to each person in Wigan for providing all of these other functions of the Building Control service excluding Building Regulations work in 2005/2006 was 96.5p.
Building Control performance information 2006/2007
Building Regulations
During 2006/2007 we received 2550 Building Regulation applications. These covered a wide range of work from small domestic alterations, new houses and flats to large commercial and industrial developments.
We aim to acknowledge most of these applications within 3 working days.
Target: 80% Performance: 62%
Changes have been made to our validation process and we will improve on this figure in 2007/2008.
We aim to issue decisions on 70% of all applications within 8 weeks.
Target: 70% Performance: 58%
We aim to inspect building work on the same day when requested before 10 am. During 2006/2007 we carried out over 9400 inspections.
Target: 100% Performance: 99.9%
Licensing
We carried out inspections on 8 licensed premises and produced reports as to their suitability and safety.
Dangerous structures
We provide a 24 hour service (7 days a week, 365 days a year) for dangerous structures. During 2006/2007 we investigated 206 reported dangerous structures. 25 of these were reported to us out of normal office hours and were inspected within 2 hours of receipt of that report.
Demolition
During 2006/2007 we received and processed 40 notifications of intention to demolish private structures within the borough.
Scaffolds
During 2006/2007 we issued permits for 136 scaffolds on the public highway.
Advice
We presented four seminars to service users and processed 994 formal enquiries regarding the need for Building Regulation approval or Planning Permission.
Built in Quality Awards
We presented our second annual award ceremony in 2006: Built in Quality Awards are designed to recognise and promote excellence in construction activity within the borough. The awards are open for all building works on which we carry out the Building Control function.
