Prospect… The Wigan Council Apprenticeship Scheme
(funded through the working neighbourhoods fund)
What is the aim of the scheme?
Wigan Council is launching a Corporate Apprenticeship Scheme following a national drive and government commitment to develop 130,000 new apprenticeship opportunities by 2010, of which 7,500 are local government and 4,500 in schools and children’s services.
The scheme aims to support the regeneration of Wigan Borough and help up skill our residents, providing opportunities to develop the skills of local people as well as bringing younger people into the workforce, providing a basis for succession planning.
How will it work?
The apprenticeship posts will link to existing permanent vacancies within all departments across the Authority and will be aimed at candidates of all ages (above 16 years). Unlike other schemes, they will also be paid in accordance with Grade 1(£12,160 per annum), which will progress to the appropriate grade for their specific role following successful completion of training and meeting a set of specific competencies.
Want to find out more?
To promote the launch of the scheme we are holding two open days:
• 16 July 2009 - Leigh Sports Village - Multi Purpose Hall
• 21 July 2009 - Robin Park - Powerade Hall
The events will run from 10:00am till 4:00pm on each day providing valuable information to potential candidates. So if you are an employee and you are interested, or know someone else who would be interested in apprenticeship then please come along to one of our open days.

Childcare vouchers from Busy Bees
Teachers are eligible from June 2006.
Do you pay for care of your children?
Do you pay income tax and national insurance?
If you answered yes to both, you could save yourself some money.
The government will allow you to have up to £55 each week (or £243 each month) paid to you as childcare vouchers instead of money. You will not pay tax and national insurance on the value of the childcare vouchers you choose. This means that the cost of the vouchers to you will be less than their value.
For more details, ring Busy Bees on 08000 430860. Or visit the Busy Bees website. They can answer any questions you have and will send you a pack of information. This will include your order form and a pack for your child’s carer.
Please note: if you are expecting a baby and using childcare vouchers, you should stop using the vouchers between 17 and 25 weeks into your pregnancy. This is to protect your maternity benefits. Statutory Maternity Pay (SMP) is worked out using your pay rate. As this would not include the value of your childcare vouchers your SMP amount would be lowered.
