The council has teams of social workers throughout the borough, who specialise in providing help to: older people, children and families, people with physical disabilities, people with learning disabilities, people with mental health problems, and carers of these people.
Social workers tend to specialise in either adult or children's services.
They help people who use social care services find solutions to their problems, by talking to them, listening and assessing them for packages of care and support that will best help them.
Social workers often work alongside other professionals, such as health staff, the police, schools and the probation service. The hours can be long and unsociable, but varied and interesting.
Qualifications
Social workers are required to have a professional qualification. This can be either the Certificate of Qualified Social Workers, Certificate in Social Services, Diploma in Social Work, or BA Hons. in Social Work.
