Sheltered housing comes in all shapes and sizes, studios, apartments and bungalows – each have their own front door but form their own mini-community, looked after by a scheme manager, in many cases living on the site.
If you want to know more about what sheltered housing is and if it might suit your needs, you can read our Guide to Sheltered Housing in Wigan Borough
There are over 70 schemes offering accommodation designed especially for older people and accommodation is available in most areas of the borough from a number of housing providers.
Most sheltered housing is available to rent. In addition there will be other charges:
- Support Charge – this includes the support provided by the Scheme Manager and the emergency alarm and response service.
- Service Charge – this includes repairs and maintenance of the communal areas and can include other services such as window cleaning, water rates or heating.
Extra care housing schemes can provide care services and meals as well as the support of the Scheme Manager to suit your needs. There will be additional charges for this.
You should check with the provider to find out what charges are made at each scheme. If you are on a low income you may get help to pay your rent and other charges.
