Renting a home from a social landlord

Social Housing is the term used to describe rented housing from either a Council or a Registered Social Landlord (RSL) often referred to as a Housing Association. These pages tell you more about Council and RSL housing in Wigan.

Council Housing

Wigan Council owns approximately 22,500 properties and is the biggest housing provider in the Wigan Borough. The Council employs Wigan & Leigh Housing (WALH) to manage the Council housing - this includes the allocation of Council housing to people on the waiting list. For more information about WALH please click here. (external link)

WALH allocate Council housing through its 2 Property Shops based in Wigan & Leigh town centres. You can also register your interest in Council housing via a website. For more information on WALH property shops please click here (external link).

Registered Social Landlords (RSLs)

There are several RSLs that operate in the Wigan Borough and they manage around 2000 properties between them. However some of these properties are specialist housing such as sheltered housing for older people. RSL housing is allocated in 2 ways. Firstly by the RSL themselves using their own allocation policy. The 2nd way of allocating RSL property is that the Council can nominate applicants from its waiting list for RSL properties. For some RSLs the Council has 50% nomination rights. This means the Council will nominate applicants for half the RSL vacancies that arise.

Below  is a list of all the RSLs that operate in Wigan Borough and external links to their websites. The main 3 RSLs with the biggest stock are Adactus, Arena and English Churches.

Mutual Exchange

If you already live in Council or RSL Housing but wish to move, a quick way to do this is to swap houses with someone else who also wants to move. This is called a mutual exchange. For more information about the rules and to see a list of people also interested in mutual exchange please contact your existing landlord.
