Tunstall House is a clubhouse in Pemberton, Wigan for people who have mental health problems, where members and staff work together in the daily running of the centre. Everyone has the opportunity to take part in different areas of work on offer. The aim is to provide a warm, friendly, relaxed and ordered working day that promotes independence and builds confidence.
To become a member of Tunstall House, you need to have been referred by a care co-ordinator or by a community mental health team. If you haven't got a care co-ordinator or contact with a community mental health team, you can make a self-referral to the Crisis Intervention Team, or ask your doctor to do it on your behalf.
If you have just moved to the borough and have not received mental health services before, you can make a self-referral to the Crisis Intervention Team. If, however, you are still under the care of a community mental health team, ask that team to make a referral on your behalf.
Once you make a referral, we will do an assessment of your needs to decide whether or not you are eligible to receive services. We use Department of Health guidance 'Fair Access to Care Services' to work out your eligibility.
The Clubhouse Model
The clubhouse model was first developed in New York in the late 1940s by a group of ex-psychiatric patients. It has now grown worldwide and there are over 320 clubhouses running. The clubhouse model focuses on finding opportunities for members to take park in meaningful work, education and social activities.
