The council offers specialist care for people with dementia in three day centres in the borough. Each provides a safe and friendly environment to meet the individual needs of people with dementia, providing emotional, spiritual and social support in a sensitive way.
The centres provide care for 10-12 people at each session. There are two sessions from 8am-1pm and 1pm-6pm Monday to Friday, and one session from 10am-6pm Saturday and Sunday. Care is tailored to meet individual needs, and is monitored and reviewed regularly. This is called 'Person Centred Care'.
There are also a comprehensive range of activities, based on individual choice, ability and need.

We hold regular meetings with carers and other people involved in providing care, and a training course has been developed specifically for carers. Wigan, Leigh and District Branch of the Alzheimer's Society also supports carers.
Cooked meals are available at all centres, and transport can be provided by the transport section.
If you haven't got a social worker or are not in contact with a community mental health team, contact the Central Duty Team to arrange for an assessment of need. This helps us to decide whether or not a person is eligible to receive services. We use Department of Health guidance 'Fair Access to Care Services' to work out eligibility.
