Hospital - Benefits Advice

There are four finance and benefits officers based at Wigan and Leigh hospitals, for people aged 65 and over and people with mental health problems.

Hospital finance and benefits officers can answer any questions you might have about benefits you are currently claiming, and can help you to claim other benefits (if appropriate) when you leave hospital.

  • If you are assessed as being eligible for care services from the council, they can visit you at home to help you to complete a financial assessment form (called a CCF1). This helps the council to work out the cost of your services (if any). They can also make a referral to the council's financial assessment team, who will visit your carer (if you have one) to advise about benefits they may be entitled to, e.g. carer's allowance.
  • They can help you apply for benefits (if appropriate) from the Department for Work and Pensions, e.g. Attendance Allowance, Disability Living Allowance.
  • They can deal with 'fast-track' applications for benefits for people who have a terminal illness.
  • They will visit residential and nursing homes to sort out contracts for services.

If you would like to see a hospital finance and benefits officer, the hospital social worker will make a referral on your behalf.
