Central Duty Team

The Central Duty Team is the first point of contact if you want an assessment from the Department of Adult Services.  We deal with all new requests for help which may need social work or occupational therapy involvement.  We also deal with re-assessments for people already receiving services.

In order to receive community care services from Wigan Council Department of Adult Services, you will have to have an assessment. This will determine whether or not you are eligible for support.

When you phone Central Duty Team, a Central Duty Officer will ask you for details about your circumstances. Depending on what information you give, they will:

  • give you immediate information about other services that may be more appropriate
  • give you immediate advice and guidance
  • take all your information and pass to a Social Worker within the team who will telephone you to complete a contact assessment

With your consent, a social worker will involve your family, carers and other professionals in the assessment. This will assist in building up an accurate picture of your current situation and will help the social worker to determine whether or not you are eligible to receive services.

Once a social worker has completed the assessment and eligibility has been established, we will direct your referral to the appropriate team in the Department of Adult Services.

To make a referral, phone the team or complete the on-line referral form.

Please note:

We use the government’s 'Fair Access to Care Services' guidelines to help us to decide your entitlement to care services. Unfortunately, if you are assessed as low or moderate need or risk, you will not qualify for community care services from the council. However, we may be able to offer you advice and some possible alternatives, or put you in touch with other organisations who may be able to help, like Starting Point.
