Finding childcare

The Family Information Service (FIS) can help you to choose the right type of childcare for you and your child in places where you live or work.
Toys and Games

The FIS maintains a database of all OFSTED registered (and OFSTED exempt) childcare providers in the borough, such as:

  • childminders
  • nurseries
  • pre-school playgroups
  • breakfast clubs and after-school clubs
  • holiday care
  • parent and toddler groups
  • services for children with disabilities and special educational needs

Staff at the FIS can do a search for you to identify which childcare providers:

  • are in your general area
  • are close to where you live or work (useful if you don’t have access to a car)
  • have current vacancies for your child’s age group
  • offer a school drop-off/collection service to the school your child attends
  • provide overnight care, and more

Information can be provided to you via the Family Service Directory (external link) or over the phone, if you need more detailed information it can be emailed or posted out to you. And if you are having difficulty finding the childcare you need (eg. hours to suit your needs), staff can offer more support to try to sort this things out for you - this is called 'brokerage'.
