Learning Disabilities

The council works in partnership with people with learning disabilities, their carers and friends, to provide support which enables them to develop the skills they need to live active and valued lives.

Specialist learning disability services in Wigan borough are provided by the Department of Adult Services. Help available includes:

  • Support to people living in their family home.
  • Support to people living in small group homes, through Supported Living Services.
  • Support to people living in The Pines residential home.
  • Support and training is offered through a day service network, based partly in day centres and other small community bases, where people can be involved in educational and meaningful activities.
  • The Supported Employment Service helps people to gain and remain in employment.
  • Short breaks (respite) are provided within specialist units in the area, and through the Adult Placement Service. The length and frequency of the breaks will be agreed with the social worker. Unplanned breaks can also be provided in emergency situations.
  • Training and development flats are located in the north and south of the borough, offering training in the development of the skills needed to live independently.
  • Meals on wheels.
  • Carers groups.
  • Service user committees.
  • Transport to day services.
  • Home care.
  • Direct Payments.

To access services, you need to have an assessment of your care needs. The assessment helps us to decide whether or not you are eligible to receive services. We use Department of Health guidance 'Fair Access to Care Services' to work out your eligibility. Contact the Central Duty Team to arrange for an assessment.
