Disabilities

• Occupational therapists can offer advice on how to perform household tasks more easily, and arrange adaptations to the home.
• The sensory team can provide advice and support to people with eyesight or hearing problems (or both).
• Learning disability teams support adults in a range of settings, e.g. in day centres or in their own homes (supported accommodation).
• Hospital social workers can arrange community care services for adults once they leave hospital.
• We process applications for blue badges (disabled parking permits), and Radar keys.
• An emergency alarm service is available 24-hours a day, 7-days a week.
• Day care and rehabilitation services are available in day centres across the borough.
• The Supported Employment Service supports adults with disabilities in finding and remaining in employment.
• Paveways (external link) disability advice line provides information about services available for people with disabilities, both locally and nationally.
• Carers services offer support and advice to people caring for someone who is elderly, sick or who has a disability.
• The adult placement service offers short breaks (respite care) for adults with disabilities.
• The children with complex needs team provides a range of support for children and their families.

We can offer some people cash payments to buy these services, or similar services from other organisations. Direct payments offer you control over your care arrangements and support independent living.

To access adult social care services, you need to have an assessment of your care needs. The assessment helps us to decide whether or not you are eligible to receive services. We use Department of Health guidance 'Fair Access to Care Services' to work out your eligibility. Contact the Central Duty Team to arrange for an assessment.
