Caring for a disabled child is rewarding and exciting, but can also be hard work, and the opportunity to do everyday things like shopping can be difficult or even impossible for some families. When families need a break, for whatever reason, Family Network may help.
The Family Network Service links families together to share the care of disabled children who have severe learning disabilities. The children can be of any age and in addition to having a severe learning disability, may also have a physical or sensory impairment or other complex needs. The family offering short term breaks will welcome the child into their own home for anything from a few hours a week to a weekend once a month. Usually carer families are matched to one child, but if they have more time to offer, this could increase. The service is currently free, financed by Wigan Children and Young People's Services, whilst families offering breaks receive a payment.
Family Network has lots to offer everyone concerned:

- Time to relax knowing that their child is well cared for, along with time to spend with other children in the family.
- The family offering the short term breaks:
- The opportunity to make a special new friend, to help their own children better understand the needs of others, and to help another family enjoy life a little more.
Who can offer short term breaks?
All sorts of people - single or married, with or without a family. Anyone with a general interest in children, and time to offer. Although no qualifications are needed, short term break carers are very carefully selected. They work with a social worker to give a full and detailed assessment on their home life,and full informal training is given.
Once approved and registered, a family will be carefully matched with a child they will enjoy looking after.
