The Children's Disability Register is used by groups involved in the planning of services for children with significant disabilities living in the area, to gain information about children with disabilities, the nature of their disability, the types of services they currently receive and what type of services they may need in the future.
Parents/carers, or young people with disabilities are the only people who can consent to registration. The Register is voluntary and names can be removed from the register at any time.
Advantages of Registration
Parents/Carers are able to contribute to the development of services for children with disabilities.
Agencies involved in the provision of services will gain a better understanding of what services are currently needed and what type of services will be needed for the future.
Parents/Carers will receive a regular newsletter produced by the Co-ordinator, to keep them informed about local/national issues.
The Register will help to identify children's needs and assist in the planning of future services.
Access to information and contact with other Parents/Carers.
How the Register Works
Families complete a registration form and a unique registration number will be issued to the child. Twelve months after registration, families will be asked if there are any significant changes to the original completed form. A full review can be arranged at this point if needed, otherwise a full review will be arranged two years after initial registration.
The Register will be managed by a group of representatives from Children and Young People's Services and the Ashton, Leigh, Wigan Primary Care Trust with guidance from Parents/Carers and young people with disabilities.
The Children Act 1989 allows the Register to be held on computer, subject to the strict requirements of the Data Protection Act. The Register is not connected to any other registers kept by Children and Young People's Services.
