Wigan Council and it’s partners believe that safeguarding children and young people is everyone’s responsibility. All agencies, staff working with children and young people, parents/carers and members of the public have a role to play to ensure that children and young people are kept safe in our community.
“Child protection is part of wider work to safeguard and promote the welfare of children and young people. It refers to the activity that is undertaken to protect specific children who are suffering, or at risk of suffering, significant harm” (Working Together, 2006).
To enable agencies to work together and keep children and young people safe, Wigan Safeguarding Children Board was launched in April 2006. All organisations within Wigan who support children and young people, have a legal responsibility to be members of the Board and to be involved in safeguarding.
Wigan’s Safeguarding Children Board oversees the work of the traditional child protection system and the Change for Children and Young People System, along with other safety issues, such as road safety and child protection in schools.
