Joint procedures for the recognition, reporting and investigation of the abuse of vulnerable adults in Wigan (.pdf, 863KB) have been drawn up by a working group representing:
- Wigan Council - Social Services Department (now Department of Adult Services, and Children and Young People's Services)
- Ashton, Leigh and Wigan Primary Care Trust
- Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh NHS Trust
- Greater Manchester Police
- Age Concern
- Wigan and Leigh Housing
The procedures have been drawn up because of concerns that vulnerable people in society may be abused or taken advantage of by those in a position of power over them.
What do we mean by 'abuse'?
Abuse can take many forms, such as:
- hitting, slapping or pushing;
- shouting or swearing, which makes the person afraid;
- unwanted touching, kissing or sexual intercourse;
- money or property taken without permission or under pressure; and
- not being cared for properly or denied privacy, choice or social contact.
What can you do if you suspect abuse?
If you know of a worrying situation, please do not ignore it. You can phone any of the agencies listed below - you don't have to give your name, but we may need to act on the information you give us and contact other relevant services.
Trained staff will carefully investigate your concerns. What happens then will depend on the wishes of the person you are concerned about and the seriousness of their situation. If they are in physical danger, making sure they are safe will be the most important thing.
We will offer the person information and advice so they can make an informed choice about any practical help they need or action they want to take. If they cannot make an informed choice, we will take action to support and protect them.
