Adoption and Fostering

Information about fostering and adoption and how you can become an adoptive parent, or foster carer within Wigan Borough. We welcome applications from a wide range of people, whatever their personal circumstances.

Adoption is a permanent way of providing a child or children with a new family, when they are unable to live with their own parents. It is a legal process, as adopters take on full parental responsibility for the child, or children.

Fostering is a way of providing a child or children with care, when they need to be looked after away from home for a period of time. Parental responsibility for the child is shared with the Council and the child’s birth parents.
