Walking

The council is promoting walking as a healthy and sustainable means of travel, especially for short journeys.

Walking is a form of transport which does not damage the environment, is healthy and is available to most people.

We have worked with partners from other Council departments, the Health Authority, GMPTE and voluntary groups to prepare a Walking Strategy (.pdf, 152Kb). An Action Plan (.pdf, 78Kb) is updated annually to coordinate efforts to promote walking and facilities.

These look at ways of making things safer and more pleasant for people on foot.

  • Town centre shopping streets, such as Standishgate in Wigan and Bradshawgate in Leigh have been pedestrianised.
  • Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust organises health walks.
  • There are ambitious plans to link the borough's own network of cycle, foot and bridle paths into various national and regional networks. Schools are promoting walking to school in their travel plans
