Travel Plans

Wigan Council encourages residents and businesses to make informed choices about how they get about, and whether they walk, use a car, a bicycle or public transport.
Sustainable modes of travel

A Travel Plan is a framework of measures designed to encourage and promote travel by more sustainable modes and to reduce travel as a whole. Travelling sustainably does not have to mean ditching the car completely, rather using it thoughtfully and selectively and travelling by a different method whenever possible.

More and more businesses are seeing the benefits which a Travel Plan can bring to their organisation. Here in Wigan Borough, organisations of all sizes and sectors are tackling their travel and transport issues through the use of a Travel Plan.

Travel Plans can lead to healthier people and a safer environment, and even to people spending less time and money on travelling.

Wigan Council offers help and advice to developers and workplaces on creating an appropriate Travel Plan. The Council is also a member of TravelWise and works with all North West authorities to promote sustainable travel. Wigan Council has produced a Supplementary Planning Document to guide developers through the Travel Plan process.
