The aim of this bulletin is to give the public advance notice of road works in the Wigan Council area. The Council recognises that roadworks can cause inconvenience and it is hoped that this information helps to minimise delays and other problems associated with the works. Every effort has been made to provide accurate and the most up to date information available but it is not intended to be a definitive list and cannot cater for works carried out at short notice. The Council also reserves the right to make changes to the programme if emergencies arise.
1. Bolton Road, Atherton
Due to wear and stresses Network Rail has replaced the railway bridge supporting the road over the train line.
United Utilities will carry out works on Saturday 4th & Sunday 5th February 2012 (changed from last week). Temporary traffic signals will be in operation.
Furthermore, a closure is planned to commence on midnight Saturday 25th February 2012 and run until 06.00hrs Monday 27th February (30 hours) to remove a temporary bridge.

2. Wallgate, Wigan
A major environmental improvement scheme commenced on Monday 28th March 2011 between Queen Street and Library Street, which includes footway and carriageway resurfacing.
Minimal disruption to traffic is expected during the working week whilst the scheme is completed.
Please note that the closure planned on Wallgate for Sunday 5th February 2012 is postponed.
However, closures are still planned for Wallgate between Queen Street and Library Street on the following Sundays:
- 12th February 2012
- 19th February 2012
- 26th February 2012
3. Plank Lane, Leigh
British Waterways have commenced major repairs on the bridge over the Leeds & Liverpool Canal. For safety the road was closed to carry out the works from Thursday 26th January 2012 for a period of 13 weeks.
The diversion route is Slag Lane, Church Lane, East Lancashire Road, Atherleigh Way, Twist Lane and Firs Lane.
4. Manchester Road, Leigh
Electric upgrade works have commenced in the Leigh area by Electricity North West. Part of the work involves cable laying in the carriageway on Manchester Road from Bangor Fold to Kenwood Avenue.
Temporary traffic lights are in operation from Tuesday 3rd January 2012 at all times for approximately 6 weeks.
5. Tyldesley Road, Atherton
Electricity North West has commenced work laying new cable from Atherton to Tyldesley. On Wednesday 11th January 2012 work commenced on Tyldesley Road at the junction of Thomas Street. The work will progress towards Tyldesley and end at Castle Street in approximately 6 weeks.
Temporary traffic signals will be in operation at all times and delays will be expected.
6. Ormskirk Road / Enfield Street / Norley Hall Avenue, Pemberton
Works to upgrade the junction and improve the traffic signals commenced on Monday 16th January 2012 for approximately 4 weeks. Lane closures may be in operation during off peak periods.
Furthermore, temporary traffic signals will be in operation on Monday 6th February 2012 for 1 week during off peak periods and delays will be expected.
7. Wigan Road, Leigh
Vodafone will carry out telecommunication works between Nel Pan Lane and Ashby Grove over 3 days commencing Monday 6th February 2012.
Temporary traffic signals will be in operation during off peak periods.
8. Bolton Road, Ashton
Electricity North West commenced cable laying works on Tuesday 31st January 2012 near to Conway Road. The duration of the works is approximately 3 weeks and will move towards Golborne Road.
Temporary traffic signals are in operation at all times.
9. Atherton Road, Hindley
Pedestrian crossing facility works will be carried out on Sunday 5th February 2012 at the junction of Borsdane Avenue. Temporary traffic signals will be in operation for 1 day.
Forthcoming Road Closures
Kenyon Lane and Newton Road, Lowton
United Utilities have a planned road closure on Kenyon Lane between Newton Road and Delamere Avenue to carry out remedial resurfacing works. The closure will commence on Saturday 11th February 2012 for approximately 1 week.
The diversion route will be Wilton Lane, Broseley Lane, Common Lane, Warrington Road, East Lancashire Road and Newton Road.
Furthermore, a sewer repair will also be carried out on Newton Road at the same time near to Winton Avenue. However, this work will be carried out under temporary traffic signals.
Bradley Lane, Standish
Network Rail will carry out bridge inspection overnight from 23.00hrs on Saturday 4th February 2012 until 07.00hrs on Sunday 5th February 2012. To carry out the operation the road will be closed.
Diversion will be via Preston Road, Pole Street (or Market Place, Church Street, High Street), Rectory Lane and Chorley Road.
Church Street, Orrell
United Utilities need to carry out drainage repairs in two locations on Church Lane:
- North West side of Church Drive
- Between Lodge Road and Edge Hall Drive
To carry out the works a road closure will be required between Lodge Road and St James Road. Both works will be carried out at the same time commencing Saturday 18th February 2012 for approximately 1 week.
The diversion route will be via Lodge Road, Sandy Lane and St James Road. Access will be available to residents via a local diversion.
Hope Street and Platt Street, Leigh
The North West Gas Alliance will commence gas replacement works at the junction of Holden Road / The Avenue / Platt Street / Hope Street on Monday 13th February 2012.
To carry out the works safely vehicles will be prohibited from driving into and out of Hope Street and Platt Street at this junction. A local diversion will be in place and the one-way working on Platt Street will be revoked to allow access.
Furthermore, the remaining roads open at the junction will be controlled by temporary traffic signals.
Harrow Road, Marsh Green
Carriageway resurfacing will be carried out on a series of 5 Sundays commencing 26th February 2012. To carry out the operation Harrow Road will be closed.
A signed local diversion will be in operation.
NOTE: Where reference is made in this bulletin to "peak periods" that period is defined as 7-30am to 9-30am and 4-0pm to 6-0pm, Monday to Friday.
