Roadworks Bulletin

The aim of this bulletin is to give the public advance notice of road works in the Wigan Council area. The Council recognises that roadworks can cause inconvenience and it is hoped that this information helps to minimise delays and other problems associated with the works. Every effort has been made to provide accurate and the most up to date information available but it is not intended to be a definitive list and cannot cater for works carried out at short notice. The Council also reserves the right to make changes to the programme if emergencies arise.

1. United Utilities – Water Mains Rehabilitation Scheme

United Utilities (Water) are carrying out major water mains replacement schemes around the Borough of Wigan. This will take place on various roads in various areas over several months. Works on major routes that are likely to cause disruption to traffic will be published in this bulletin.

High Street / School Lane / Preston Road, Standish

Major works are planned at this busy junction that includes replacing the permanent traffic signals with temporary signals. The timings of the signals will be adjusted to accommodate working in the junction safely. There have been technical difficulties in supplying water whilst work is ongoing and as a result the work commenced on Tuesday 24th March 2009 for approximately 17 weeks (change from last week). Delays are expected.

Furthermore, Market Street will be closed and vehicles will be diverted via High Street, Wigan Road and Chorley Road.

2. Tyldesley Town Centre

An environment & safety improvement scheme commenced on the following roads on Tuesday 26th May 2009 for 16 weeks:

Works involve carriageway patching, footway patching, small kerbing works and road markings. Lane closures may be in operation and streets adjoining the above roads may be affected.

3. Kirkhall Lane / Atherleigh Way, Leigh

A road safety and junction improvement scheme commenced at this junction on Monday 20th April 2009. At present the majority of the work is off the highway however lane closures during off peak periods may be required. The duration is for approximately 12 weeks and further information will be provided in due course.

4. Warrington Road, Abram

 National Grid Gas are carrying out a major improvement works to their gas mains throughout the Abram area. On Thursday 4th June 2009 work will commence on Warrington Road from Kingsdown Road to Simpkin Street. Work is in the carriageway therefore temporary traffic signals will be in operation at all times for approximately 4 weeks.

In addition there will be temporary one-way working between Bickershaw Lane and Simpkin Street in a northerly direction (i.e. prohibit vehicles travelling in a southerly direction) which is scheduled to be in operation on 10 consecutive weekends commencing on Saturday 27th & Sunday 28th June 2009.

Please note that not all weekends will be used and signage will be displayed on site in advance of the works warning motorists of the next forthcoming closure.

The one-way working is scheduled to be in operation on Sunday 5th July 2009.

Alternative route – Bickershaw Lane, Smith’s Lane, Leigh Road, Wigan Road, Firs Lane, Plank Lane, Slag Lane, Golborne Road, Lowton Road, Wigan Road, Aye Bridge Road.

5. A580 East Lancashire Road – Pennington and Bedford Bridges

Major works are planned on the A580 at Pennington Bridge and Bedford Bridge (east of Greyhound Island). Bridge re-waterproofing will be carried out on both bridges at the same time to minimise the duration. A contra-flow will be in operation reducing travelling to one lane in either direction and the speed limit will be set to a maximum of 30mph. Delays are expected.

Enabling works will be carried out prior to the main works starting on the 6th July 2009 and will lead up to the main works but lane closure will only be in operation during off peak periods.

6. College Avenue, Wigan

Major construction work for the new Joint Service Centre has commenced and as part of this work College Avenue between Millgate and Library Street was closed indefinitely on Monday 15th June 2009.

7. Bradley Lane, Standish

Electric cable laying works have commenced on this road and to carry out this operation safely the road will need to be closed under the Railway Bridge from Monday 20th July 2009 (change from last week) for 2 weeks.

Diversion will be via Platt Lane, Chorley Road, Wigan Road, High Street, Preston Road, Avondale Street

8. Wigan Road, Ashton

Drainage repair work commenced on Tuesday 30th June 2009 for 2 days near to Ashland Avenue.

Temporary traffic signals will be in operation for the duration of the works. (HM)

9. Gidlow Lane, Wigan

National Grid Gas are carrying out a improvement works to their gas mains near to Rylands Street.

Temporary traffic signals will be in operation on Thursday 2nd July 2009 for 2 days during off peak times

10. Manchester Road, Ince

Improvement works are being carried out at the junction with Makerfield Way. To carry out the work safely temporary traffic signals will be in operation on Sunday 5th July 2009 for 1 day only.

Walking days planned this weekend

Worsley Mesnes Churches Together Walking Day

A walking procession is scheduled to take place on Sunday 5th July 2009 and will require closures on the following roads:

  • Browning Avenue – from St Paul’s Avenue to Snowden Avenue
  • Snowden Avenue - from Browning Avenue to Poolstock Lane
  • Howden Drive - from Poolstock Lane to Ashby Road
  • Ashby Road – from Howden Drive to Carr Lane
  • Carr Lane – from Ashby Road to Poolstock Lane

The event is due to commence at 1400 hours and is expected to last till 1515 hours.

Forthcoming Road Closures

Astley Street, Tyldesley

National Grid Gas will commence gas mains replacement work shortly on Astley Street near to Standish Street. To carry out the work safely the road will be closed to through traffic on Saturday 25th July 2009 for 2 weeks.

The alternative route is Prince’s Avenue, Manchester Road, Church Road (Astley), Henfold Road, Hough Lane, Manchester Road (Tyldesley).

Higher Green Lane / Lower Green Lane, Astley

Carriageway resurfacing will be undertaken shortly between Whitehead Lane and Cleworth Close. To carry out this operation safely the road will be closed to through traffic whilst the work is undertaken.

The closure is now delayed and not expected to commence until 28th September 2009 for approximately 6 weeks. The diversion route will be signed via a private road leading to the A580. (HM)
