Roadworks Bulletin

Prepared  21st  May 2013 - Issue 715

The aim of this bulletin is to give the public advance notice of road works in the Wigan Council area. The Council recognises that roadworks can cause inconvenience and it is hoped that this information helps to minimise delays and other problems associated with the works. Every effort has been made to provide accurate and the most up to date information available but it is not intended to be a definitive list and cannot cater for works carried out at short notice. The Council also reserves the right to make changes to the programme if emergencies arise.

1. Pemberton to Ashton in Makerfield

Electricity North West are carrying out major works upgrading their network between Pemberton and Ashton in Makerfield. Over several weeks works will impact on major routes and those that are likely to cause congestion will be published in this bulletin.

Billinge Road, Highfield

Work commenced on Monday 13th May 2013 between Merton Road and Foundry Lane. Temporary traffic signals will be in operation at all times for approximately 3 weeks.

2. Gathurst Lane, Gathurst

Carriageway and footway reconstruction works commenced on Monday 13th May 2013 from the new housing development to the canal bridge. Temporary traffic signals will be in operation at all times for approximately 4 weeks.

3. Poolstock, Wigan

Footway resurfacing will be carried out between Morton Avenue and Tipping Street on Friday 23rd May 2013 for a new housing development. Temporary traffic signals will be in operation for 1 day.

4. Warrington Road, Ince

United Utilities will carry out waste water repairs on this road commencing Tuesday 28th May 2013 near to Orrell Street. Temporary traffic signals will be in place at all times for approximately 1 week

5. Bryn Road, Ashton in Makerfield

Work to reconstruct the railway bridge will begin shortly (see Forthcoming Road Closures below). However prior to the main scheme ancillary works will be required to remove utility service from the existing bridge.

The works commenced under temporary traffic signals on Monday 20th May 2013 and will be in operation until the road is closed for the main works on Monday 3rd June 2013.

6. Church Lane, Lowton

National Grid Gas are currently carrying out gas mains replacement works on this road. Temporary traffic signals are in operation at all times and the expected completion date is Friday 31st May 2013.

7. Wigan Road, Ashton

United Utilities have urgent waste water repairs to carry out commencing Tuesday 27th May 2013near to Haslemere Industrial Estate. Temporary traffic signals will be in place at all times for approximately 1 week

8. Civic Parade, Wigan

A Civic Parade for the Mayor will take place on Sunday 26th May 2013. The following roads will be closed between 09.45hrs to 10.45hrs.

  • Carr Lane from Stewart Road to Ashby Road
  • Ashby Road for its full length
  • Howden Drive for its full length
  • Poolstock Lane from Howden Drive to Carr Lane
  • St Paul’s Avenue from Poolstock Lane to Walpole Avenue

9. Scot Lane, Aspull

Bus stop upgrades in various locations commenced on Monday 20th May 2013. Temporary traffic signals may be in operation during off peak periods for approximately 1 week.

Forthcoming Road Closures

Darlington Street, Wigan

BT will carry out work outside the Courts on Sunday 2nd June 2013. To carry out the work safely the road will be closed to traffic travelling in an easterly direction from Harrogate Street and will need to divert via Millgate and Warrington Lane.

Traffic travelling west from Darlington Street West / Warrington Lane will not be affected.

Bryn Road, Ashton

As part of the ongoing North West Electrification project by Network Rail the railway bridge on Bryn Road will be reconstructed.

This means that the road will need a complete closure whilst the operation is undertaken on Monday 3rd June 2013 until Monday 9th September 2013 (14 weeks). Access will be available for pedestrians at all times because a temporary bridge footbridge will be in operation.

Also, works from utility companies will be undertaken prior to the closure removing their infrastructure from the bridge then returning same after the closure.

The diversion route for access on the east side of the bridge will be Wigan Road, Bolton Road, Bryn Road South and the route will be signed.

Wigan Youth Zone - Wigan

A procession will take place to mark the opening of the Wigan Youth Zone on Saturday 8th June 2013. The procession will start in Mesnes Park then continue on the following roads heading into the Town Centre.

  • Mesnes Park Terrace
  • Parson Walk
  • New Market Street (crossing over)
  • Market Street
  • Market Place.

The procession will start at 15.00hrs and the above roads will be closed to allow the walk to proceed safely.

Gathurst Lane, Gathurst

Major road construction works will commence shortly. To complete these works the carriageway will be resurfaced under a road closure over the canal bridge on the following dates:

Sunday 9th, 16th & 23rd June 2013

The diversion route will be via Church Lane, Wigan Road, Wigan Lower Road, Woodhouse Drive, Scot Lane, Robin Park Road, Ormskirk Road, Orrell Road and Gathurst Road.

Church Walks

Aspull Churches together

It is planned to take place on Sunday 2 June 2013, starting at 14:00 hrs in Aspull. The following restrictions will be in place:

  • Temporary closure of Haigh Road –Toddington Lane to St Davids Crescent.
  • Temporary closure of St Davids Crescent - Haigh Road to Holly Road
  • Temporary closure of Holly Road – St Davids Crescent to Wigan Road
  • Temporary closure of Wigan Road – Holly Road to Bolton Road.

Orrell Churches Together

It is planned to take place on Sunday 2nd June 2013 in Orrell starting at 14:00 hrs and expected to finish at 15:00 hrs. The following restrictions will be in place:

  • Temporary closure of Lodge Road - Winstanley Road to Sandy Lane
  • Temporary closure of St Lukes Drive - Lodge Road to Vicarage Road.
  • Temporary closure of Vicarage Road - St Lukes Drive to Sandy Lane
  • Temporary closure of Sandy Lane - Marl Grove to Lodge Road
  • Temporary closure of Marl Grove - Sandy Lane to Jubilee Avenue
  • Temporary closure of Jubilee Avenue - Marl Grove to Sandy Lane
