Roadworks are carried out by a number of organisations as well as by the council. Many are the responsibility of the statutory undertakers; these are firms such as the water, gas, electricity and telecommunications companies.
Wigan Council monitors the submission of Notification of Works documents from anyone wishing to carry out works within the highway to ensure that any conflicts are minimised and where they cannot be avoided, that the parties involved work in co-operation with one another.
In addition, the council monitors the quality of the work inaccordance with national specifications. We co-ordinate as far as possible the carrying out of roadworks, but the responsibility for planning, guarding and signing works rests with the statutory undertaker.
Where road closures and diversions are necessary as a result of major roadworks, the Street Works Co-ordinator can advise about alternative routes.
