Traffic Management

Wigan Council is the highway authority for Wigan Borough. It is our aim to provide better highway conditions for all road users and to manage the traffic within the borough with professionalism to create safer roads, improve accessibility and reduce congestion.

Good traffic management promotes safety for all road users. It enables the safe passage of vehicles on the highway. A variety of traffic calming techniques are used to improve road safety and reduce road accidents. All modern traffic-calming schemes are constructed in such a way that all members of the community can use them.

The Council's Traffic Section, based in the Environmental Services Department, can give advice on various traffic control measures, such as:

  • no waiting schemes
  • one-way schemes
  • bus lanes
  • traffic calming
  • pedestrianisation
  • accident prevention
  • installation of pedestrian crossings
  • traffic lights

Reducing accidents

Wigan Council is committed to reducing the number of road accidents in the borough.

Warning signs, road markings and road surface improvements have had some success. Devices such as safety cameras can be used at dangerous sites which meet strict criteria, but the overall message is that drivers should be aware of speed limits and that the signed maximum speed may not be a safe speed for the current conditions.
