Wigan South Central: Gateway - What Is It?

Wigan South Central Gateway is the council’s plan to get Wigan moving by transforming and improving one of the major transport routes into the town centre.

The multi-million pound project is made up of improvements to the Saddle Junction and work to enhance the Wallgate area of the town centre.

The Saddle Junction Improvement Scheme:

This project aims to ease congestion around the Saddle Junction area and open surrounding areas up for regeneration and re-development.

  • The plan is to provide a new link which will run from Pottery Road, along the side of the River Douglas, under Adam Viaduct and into the Saddle Junction. This scheme has planning approval and work began in early 2011 on alterations to the junction in preparation for the new road, which will be constructed during 2012.
  • The entire project forms part of the larger Wigan South Central Masterplan to create a new central gateway into the town and the borough which showcases some of Wigan’s natural and historical assets whilst creating modern new buildings for both residential and business use.
  • The work at Saddle is being carried out alongside major investment in the street scene from a Heritage Lottery Grant and other funding for the area around Wallgate and the town's two main railway stations.

The main benefits of the Wigan Central Gateway improvement scheme are:

  • It will help to improve transport links into Wigan and alleviate the heavy congestion at one of the borough’s busiest sections of highway.
  • It will act as a catalyst for further regeneration of the surrounding areas to create new development opportunities.
  • It will support the local economy by helping to secure the long-term future of Wigan town centre as a shopping and work destination.
