New Parking Rules

From 31 March 2008 Wigan Council will be working under new parking rules.  The new rules and guidance are being introduced under the Traffic Management Act 2004.

The new rules will provide motorists with a fairer and more transparent parking enforcement service.  Parking Attendants will be known as Civil Enforcement Officers and enforcement will be proportional to the contravention's seriousness. For example a higher penalty charge of £70 will apply to contraventions such as parking on a double yellow line whereas a lesser charge of £50 will apply to 'parked after the expiry of paid for time at a pay and display bay'.

Please refer to the list of contraventions for further information regarding charging levels:

Wigan Council will be more transparent about their parking management policies, undertake regular reviews of policies through consultation with stakeholders and communicate these policies effectively to the public. Wigan Council are currently developing a new Parking Strategy which will help improve traffic management and parking in the future for everyone who lives, works and visits the borough.

Wigan Council is also developing a policy and approach to cancellations which tells you where we may or may not cancel a Penalty Charge Notice.  Wigan Council will always consider all correspondence that includes compelling reasons or mitigating circumstances. It is also important to note that each and every case is considered on its own merits.
