Highways Design

The design of the borough's new roads and improvements to existing roads are the responsibility of the highways design team.  They are part of the Engineering Consultancy sector in the council's Environmental Services Department.  As well as working on new road schemes, the team conducts full topographical surveys of land, highways and bridges. The team offer a service to external clients on all aspects of carriageway design.

New roads, and junction improvements and work to implement the borough's local transport plan, are designed by an in-house team of council engineering consultants.

Recent projects include the major routes around the new Westwood employment area in Wigan, where traffic access has been maintained whilst roads, water routes, and miles of electricity and other cables, have been moved and diverted. Other schemes include an access road for new units in Higher Ince at the end of Makerfield Way and junction improvements in Lowton on Church Street and Slag Lane.

Atherton Town Centre

During the last 4 years £0.8m has been invested by Wigan Council in Atherton Town Centre. All the design and project management of the works has been carried out by the Engineering Consultancy. This has included the remodelling of Market Street to become a traffic-free pedestrian zone, and the re-designation of Mealhouse Lane from a one-way route to an upgraded two-way diversion away from the town centre pedestrian area
