  • The investigation of highway subsidence which can be due to shallow mine workings, unstable ground (Sandyforth Farm Open Cast Coal Site 50m deep excavation) or leaking sewers.
  • The approval of the design of lighting column foundations which cannot be planted in the ground to their normal depth.
  • Monitoring Developers and Statutory Undertakers work affecting the Council's highway structures.
  • Representing the Director of Engineering Services at Officers working group meetings.
  • Preparing and reviewing the highway structures part of the Authority’s Local Transport Plan.
  • Managing the design and construction of new highway structures usually as part of a highway scheme (such as the Westwood link road scheme in Wigan).
  • Maintaining the register of streets with engineering difficulties under the New Roads and Street Works Act 1991.
