The finance for carrying out work to highway structures comes from both Revenue and Capital Budgets. An occasional scheme is also financed by an outside body such as The Coal Authority.
The Revenue finance is used for minor maintenance of highway structures as well as maintenance and replacement of footbridges. This has recently been approximately £50,000 per annum.
The Capital finance is used for the assessment, strengthening and replacement of sub-standard structures as well as for major maintenance schemes, ranging between £270,000 and £520,000 per annum.
