Clinical Waste Removal

The council will collect certain items of clinical waste.

Clinical waste

Clinical Waste is any waste which poses a threat of infection to humans. The term also includes drugs or other pharmaceutical products and may be defined as hazardous waste.

Because of the specialist nature of this type of waste, Wigan Council can only offer the service of collecting certain, selected items. Please see below for details.

Items we DO collect:

  • Syringes, needles or other sharp instruments

Used needles and syringes ('sharps') on public land can be removed by the council. When contacting us, please tell us exactly where the problem is located. There is no charge for this service.

Items we DON'T collect:

  • Human or animal tissue
  • Blood or other bodily fluids
  • Excretions
  • Drugs or other pharmaceutical products
  • Swabs or dressings

Please contact the Environmental Services Helpline for more details on the collection of clinical waste.
