Clinical waste
A free clinical waste collection service is available for items such as needles and stoma bags. These items must not be put in your normal household waste nor taken to the household waste recycling centres.
Hazardous waste
You can take small quantities of potentially hazardous household products such as those used in cleaning (solvents), gardening (pesticides) , DIY (thinners, paint), car maintenance (engine oil), batteries, fluorescent tubes, televisions and computer monitors to the borough's household waste recycling centres.
All hazardous waste and liquid waste should be taken to the household waste recycling centres and must not be included in your domestic waste. Please ask a site attendant where you should place these items.
Household asbestos
The Kirkless Household Waste Recycling Centre in Higher Ince can accept asbestos waste by appointment only from householders. Contact the site directly on 01942 825755 and report to the weighbridge. If you are using a van or twin axled trainer, you will need to apply for a permit in advance either by phoning 01942 404366 or online.
The asbestos must be kept as intact as possible and double wrapped in heavy duty plastic and sealed. If it is dusty or likely to break, or has already been broken, it must be damped and handled with gloves and face mask. All pieces must be double wrapped in heavy duty bags and sealed. Do not break it to fit it into bags.
Pesticides
An EU directive implemented on 31st December 2003 removed from sale almost 10% of common garden pesticide products as they could cause environmental damage. If you have any old pesticides please view the government website to check if they are legal for use and, if not, take them to a household waste recycling centre. More information avaliable from the Pesticides Safety Directorate (PSD) (External link) website.
Refuse clearance
Please note that if you employ a rubbish clearance, gardening or odd job company and your waste is found dumped illegally you are still responsible for it.
Always ask to see the Waste Carrier's Licence and check this with the Environment Agency, telephone 0845 333111.
Tyres
Tyres can be taken to any household waste recycling centres for recycling. Tyres from any commercial vehicles are NOT accepted on the sites.
