Each year, UK beverage carton manufacturers produce 55,000 tonnes of paper-based cartons for milk, juice, sauces and other liquid food/drinks. This equates to around 2.3kg of cartons per household which could be recycled instead of thrown in the rubbish bin. In response, we are working with Tetra Pak and the carton industry body ACE UK (Alliance for Beverage Cartons and the Environment) to establish carton collection points at key recycling points for residents to take their empty cartons to be recycled.
Please take your 'TetraPak' drinks cartons to one of these recycling sites:
- Slag Lane Household Waste Recycling Centre, Slag Lane, Leigh, WA3 1BZ
- Chanters Household Waste Recycling Centre, Chanters Industrial Estate, Arley Way, off Tyldesley Old Road, Atherton, M46 9FF
- Frog Lane Household Wastle Recycling Centre, Frog Lane, Wigan, WN6 7LP
- Tesco Stores Ltd, Cross Street, Hindley, Wigan, WN2 3AT
- Somerfield Store, 10 The Gerard Centre, Gerard Street, Ashton-In-Makerfield, Wigan, WN4 9AN
In time, we hope to add further sites to this list if this new service proves to be successful.
Hot tips
- Please squash the cartons as much as possible as this will allow us to store greater quantities in the recycling bins, therefore minimising the number of collections required and therefore vehicle movements.
- You can leave caps on. They will be removed in the recycling process.
- Please recycle them at these locations, as they cannot go in paper sacks or card recycling banks. This is because they are not made solely of paper/card but consist of three main materials Paper, Aluminium and low density polyethylene. They require a separate recycling process to recovery the re-useable materials.
