Garden Waste

There are two forms of garden waste recycling available to residents at home.  The council organises fortnightly collections of garden waste and clean brown cardboard from around two thirds of all homes.  For those homes not in the scheme, or for those wanting to recycling other green waste, discount home composters are available from the council's partner organisation.  In addition to these services, green waste can also be taken to the council's household waste recycling centres at Kirkless in Higher Ince, Chanters in Atherton, Frog Lane in Wigan and Slag Lane in Leigh.

Garden waste collections

Around two thirds of homes in the borough can now have their garden waste collected and recycled.

Every two weeks, on the same day that the black wheelie bin is emptied, special collection vehicles will empty the green bin.  The team can take:

  • plants and flowers
  • twigs and branches
  • grass cuttings
  • leaves and weeds
  • corrugated clean brown cardboard (NOT food packaging)

We cannot take: plastic bags, bin liners, plant pots, rubble, timber, food waste, nappies, paper, cereal packets, pizza boxes or other forms of card.

Please ensure that you do not contaminate the green waste because the materials collected by the team are used as a soil enhancer on a local farm.

For those properties not involved in the collections, or for those wanting to composter other materials, special discount home composter kits are available from the council's partners in the government's WRAP agency (external link).  Prices are from £17 for the 220 litre "Compost Converter", £20 for the 330 litre version and £40 for the 250 litre KOMPT box.  All are made from 100% recycled material and prices include home delivery for Wigan Borough residents.

The council's household waste recycling centres at Kirkless in Higher Ince, Slag Lane in Leigh, Frog Lane in Wigan and Chanters in Atherton also accept residents' domestic garden waste.

Thank you for supporting recycling in Wigan Borough.
