Garden Waste

The council organises fortnightly collections of garden waste and clean brown cardboard from many households. For any other home in the borough wanting a green bin, please contact us and your request will be looked into. You can also order a composter to recycle green and kitchen waste at home.

Latest News:

Garden Waste Collections are operating as normal.

Please refer to your recycling calendar for your day of collection.

Most properties in the borough can now have their garden waste collected and recycled.

Every two weeks, on the same day that the black wheelie bin is emptied, special collection vehicles will empty the green bin.  The team can take:

  • plants and flowers
  • twigs and branches
  • grass cuttings
  • leaves and weeds
  • corrugated clean brown cardboard (NOT food packaging)

We cannot take: plastic bags, bin liners, plant pots, rubble, timber, food waste, nappies, paper, cereal packets, pizza boxes or other forms of card.

Please ensure that you do not contaminate the green waste because the materials collected by the team are used as a soil enhancer on a local farm.

Green waste can also be taken to the council's household waste recycling centres at Kirkless in Higher Ince, Chanters in Atherton, Frog Lane in Wigan and Slag Lane in Leigh.

The council's household waste recycling centres at Kirkless in Higher Ince, Slag Lane in Leigh, Frog Lane in Wigan and Chanters in Atherton also accept residents' domestic garden waste.

Thank you for supporting recycling in Wigan Borough.
