If you would like to request a small Blue bin, continue to use a white sack, or share with a neighbour please register your blue bin request online.

Not sure which decision to make?

Please read this carefully as you have several options before your blue bin is delivered:

Your options Will this suit your household? What you need to do next
I want a normal size blue bin  My household is average with a with a couple of adults, possibly children. We might get a few newspapers but will produce cardboard packaging. Do nothing. You'll automatically receive a normal size blue bin
I'd like a half size blue bin I am on my own or have a very small household and don't produce much paper or cardboard waste. Register your blue bin request online or contact the helpline on (01942) 404364
I'd like to keep my white sack I am on my own or have a very small household and don't produce much paper or cardboard waste. I might also have storage issues which makes a sack better than a bin. Register your blue bin request online or contact the helpline on (01942) 404364
I'd like to share a large or small blue bin with my neighbour Between me and my neighbour we are likely to produce enough paper and cardboard to fill a blue bin. I might also have storage issues and sharing would reslove this better than having a sack. Step 1 - Discuss with your neighbour and agree which one of you wants to keep the bin on your property. Step 2 - Agree what size best meets your needs. Step 3 - Register your blue bin request online or contact the helpline on (01942) 404364

About your blue bin collection

Your blue bin (or white sack if you have chosen not to have a blue bin) is collected once every four weeks. Find my next collection day

Please make sure that your blue bin is placed at the edge of your property (or at your designated collection point) by no later than 7am on your regular collection day. You must return your bin to your property by the end of your collection day.

Items you can recycle in your blue bin

  • Paper
  • Newspapers and magazines
  • Catalogues
  • Telephone directories
  • Envelopes
  • Junk mail
  • Greetings cards (without glitter)
  • Coloured cardboard such as cereal boxes
  • Plain cardboard
  • Toilet roll and kitchen roll tubes
  • Waxed cartons such as fruit juice and milk cartons

Please:

  • Do not put your recycling in plastic bags as these cannot be recycled.
  • Put your house name or number on your bin to help keep it safe.
  • Do not overfill your bin. Bins that are over flowing or too heavy cannot be lifted by the operatives or the vehicles and will not be emptied. If you have extra rubbish, make sure you throw it away properly. Put it in the bin after your bin has been emptied ready for your next collection or check to see if your nearest Household Waste Recycling Centre can accept it. There are also many local recycling points around the borough where you can recycle a variety of different materials.

What happens to the rubbish in my blue bin / white sack?

Your paper, card and cartons are taken to Shotton Paper Mill in North Wales, where it is recycled into items such as newspapers, magazines and packaging. You can help to reduce the amount of rubbish going to landfill by recycling as much of your rubbish as possible. You can also try to reuse items, such as envelopes. Better still; try to avoid creating rubbish in the first place, such as registering to receive your bills and banks statements online, rather than on printed statements.
