Health
Although life expectancy has improved in Wigan borough, it is still lower than the national average and 22% of the population have a long-term limiting illness. The percentage of the population who smoke has fallen since 2001 and so has the number of people suffering from smoking related diseases. However, levels of obesity have risen and participation in physical activity is low compared to the national average.
Ashton, Leigh and Wigan Primary Care Trust (ALWPCT) delivers community-based healthcare services and is responsible for the support and development of over 160 GPs, 115 dentist, 63 pharmacies and 42 optical establishments as well as a range of healthcare services delivered at 19 clinics (including 6 LIFT centres) and 1 primary care resource centre.
The Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh Acute NHS Trust is commissioned by the PCT to provide emergency and acute work such as secondary care and hospital-based services.
Leisure
The importance of leisure provision for all ages and its role in tackling both health related and social issues is recognised by the council and its partners.
Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust (WLCT) (external link) is a charitable trust which works on behalf of the council to manage and support leisure and cultural facilities, initiatives and events across the Wigan borough.
Their web site provides links to information about current events, sports facilities and leisure centres, the active living initiatives, Wigan POPP (Partnerships for Older People Projects), libraries, culture, tourism and much more.
