Wigan has the lowest rate of crime (BCS10) of all the Greater Manchester Authorities. However, personal safety is a very important issue for residents in the borough and recent survey results show that fear of crime is still quite high.
The majority of actual crime is located in the two town centres of Wigan and Leigh with further concentrations in the most deprived parts of the Borough.
Community safety in Wigan is tackled by a range of agencies working in partnership, including Wigan Council, Greater Manchester Police, Victim and Witness Support, Drugs and Alcohol Services, Greater Manchester Fire Service and the Probation services amongst many others.
Priorities and action plans are produced at a strategic, township and local level by analysing a wide range of data and using an evidence based approach. Over the past year some of the work undertaken by the Partnership has involved:
- Erecting Alley-gates to combat antisocial behaviour and burglary
- Supporting Home-watch schemes
- Piloting a neighbourhood approach to policing and service delivery
- Providing increased reassurance to victims of crime and anti-social behaviour, particularly those who experience repeats
- Providing activities and facilities for young people in our most deprived communities
- Cleaning Graffiti
- Tackling repeat locations for Anti social behaviour
- Improving the ways in which we target litter and fly tipping
- Getting Probation’s unpaid work teams onto neighbourhood clear ups
