Carbon Management

Cllr David Molyneux, Cabinet Member for the Environment
“Climate change is one of the greatest challenges facing us all today. The effects on the borough’s communities, environment and economy could be far-reaching, which means we have a duty to act and to encourage others to do the same." Cllr David Molyneux, Cabinet Member, Environment.

Wigan Council takes its leadership obligations on climate change very seriously. We aim to reduce our energy use, lessen our impact on the environment and work with our partners to help make Wigan borough a place where people want to live.

Wigan Council has joined businesses, individuals, community groups and other local authorities and has signed up to the 10:10 campaign (External Link) which aims to reduce carbon emissions during 2010.

Our five year carbon management plan (.pdf, 495Kb), developed in partnership with the Carbon Trust (External link), could save up to £10million and halve projected CO2 emissions by 2011.

The council is also signatory to the Nottingham Declaration on Climate Change (External link), pledging local action on carbon emissions.
