In addition, special teams of "caretakers" work in the town centres throughout the week and into the evenings, undertaking repairs, tidying shrubbery and removing chewing gum. The council fines people for dropping rubbish or fly tipping and asks residents and visitors to "Kick Litter into Touch" and either use a bin or take their litter home.
The Council is responsible for keeping roads and pavements clean and the street cleasing team will remove litter, leaves, grit and debris from the roadside and council-owned land.
We cannot deal with private land, unadopted roads or private footpaths. Many areas of the borough are the responsibility of Wigan and Leigh Homes, or the Leisure and Culture Trust.
If you feel that there is an area requiring attention that is the council's responsibility, please contact the Environmental Services Helpline on 01942 404364.
Street Cleansing operations across the borough are carried out to a schedule. Fixed routes and any additional work are given to operatives daily. The work is allocated on a priority basis:
- Town Centres
- Litter Hot Spots (over 100 to be attended to daily)
- Main Roads
- Priority Estates
- Residential Roads
If you think an area has fallen below the high standard of cleanliness you would expect, please tell us.
Please help our operatives by keeping our streets tidy: Kick Litter into Touch!
