The anti gum litter campaign was launched in Leigh in September 2008 by the Mayor, Cllr Rona Winkworth.

To highlight the chewing gum litter campaign, an event took place on Monday 8th September at Leigh Civic Square and another on Saturday 13th September 2008 at The Wiend in Wigan Town Centre.

During the day members of the public could express their own opinions and ideas about chewing gum litter by filling in a questionnaire about chewing gum. The environmental education team’s officers were also on hand to give any information about the campaign along with freebies such as Wrap-its, which can be used to wrap up your gum an dispose of it responsibly.

Each event offered also offered a variety of fun activities such as music and free face painting as well as free use of a Velcro Wall, where they had the chance to put on a Velcro covered suit, run, jump, spring and try to stick themselves as high up the Velcro covered inflatable wall as they could (to highlight the ‘sticky’ theme of chewing gum)! The borough’s very own mascot ‘Wiggy’ also came along to both events to join in on the fun and help spread the message of anti chewing gum litter.

Leigh also had a special appearance from the Mayor, Cllr Rona Winkworth, who came to show her support for the campaign and find out more about this issue, which is a priority concern for many residents.

Over both days, whether it was to fill in a questionnaire, getting a free Wrap-it or having a go at the Velcro wall, around three hundred people were involved in the launch events, with hundreds of Wrap-its handed out to the public.
