Air Quality Management

Local authorities have responsibilities for tackling poor air quality and are working towards improving air quality across the borough.

Air Quality Monitoring

A comprehensive programme of air quality monitoring is undertaken across the Wigan borough including real time automatic monitoring stations in Wigan and Leigh. The following pollutants are/have been measured:

  • Particulate matter
  • Nitrogen Oxides
  • Sulphur Dioxide
  • Carbon Monoxide
  • Ozone
  • Hydrocarbons
  • Lead

The real time monitoring station at the Deanery High School, Frog Lane, Wigan (known as Wigan Centre) is affiliated to the Government's national network of stations. Results from this station are available on the UK Air Quality Archive web site (external link).

Results from both the Leigh and Wigan Monitoring stations are also available on the Manchester Area Pollution Advisory Council web site (external link).

Local Air Quality Management

Wigan is working with other local authorities in the Manchester area towards achieving government air quality objectives including:

  • Undertaking a programme of reviews and assessments of air quality
  • Designating Air Quality Management Areas
  • Implementing Air Quality Action Plans
