What Are They?
Slugs are long, slender creatures about 7-15cm long and vary in colour from yellow to grey. Their eyes are on stalks on the head and they have no legs.
Where Do They Live?
Usually in the garden, in moist cracks and crevices, etc. They normally remain hidden during the day and come out at night to feed.
Sometimes they come indoors, if the house is damp, and will live in cellars and under floors.
What Do They Eat?
Animal and plant remains.
What Can I Do to Get Rid of Them?
Slugs, although they do not harm, are annoying because of the trails they leave behind. They are associated with dampness so curing the dampness and replacing any rotten timbers, sealing obvious holes where they may enter the house, etc, will make the house unattractive to them. In addition, remove any garden waste, building waste and so on, from around the outside of the house.
Pesticides are available from garden centres and chemists for the control of slugs. Read and follow the instructions on the product label precisely. Use only products that state on the label that it may be used to control slugs.
Remember, pesticides can be poisonous to children and pets. After use store container and contents away from children, or dispose of empty container safely.
