Troubled by Summer Pests ? – Bees, Wasps and Ants
Bees
During late spring/early summer it is often the time we see more insects including bees, wasps and ants. Hornets are rarely found in the area.
Bees are essential to the environment as pollinators and predator of garden pests. Typically we see honeybees, the larger ‘furry’ bumblebee and the small masonry bee, which does not have a sting. Whilst stings can for some create a serious medical reaction, if undisturbed bees are generally not aggressive and pose little risk to the public.
During May/June bees will swarm as a queen moves on to form a new colony and may congregate on trees or buildings for a hour or so before moving on.
Wigan Council do not support the treatment of bees, however, a pest control operative can identify the bees and in the case of honeybees recommend contacting a local bee keeper. British Beekeepers Association site (external link).
Wasps
Unlike bees, wasps are generally more aggressive and whilst they do not swarm can colonise new nests in trees or buildings including houses. Effective treatment can be typically achieved with a single visit.
Ants
The most common ants found in the home are garden ants and whilst they pose no risk to human health can be a nuisance. Effective treatment can typically be achieved with a single visit.
DIY treatments can be purchased from supermarkets and DIY stores, however Wigan Council recommend you contact a professional pest control service to undertake the treatment safely and effectively on your behalf.
