Trees and woodlands which contribute to the local environment can be protected by a Tree Preservation Order (TPO). Trees in Conservation Areas have similar protection. It is an offence to cut down or damage a protected tree.
To apply for consent to carry out works on trees that are covered by a Tree Preservation Order you will need to complete the Application for tree works: works to trees subject to a preservation order and/or notification of proposed works to trees in conservation areas (.pdf, 479Kb).
How can I find out if my tree is protected by a Preservation Order?
Contact the Trees and Woodlands Officer by telephone or email or call into the office between the hours 9:00 am and 5:00 pm.

Section 197 of the Town and Country Planning Act 1990 places a duty on Local Planning Authorities to ensure that in granting planning permission for any development adequate provision is made by the imposition of conditions for the preservation or planting of trees.
