Natural Environment

Wigan’s Natural Environment revolves around landscapes rich in wildlife and full of potential for countryside recreation.

This is recognised by much of the borough being identified as the North West regions best possible area for a “Regional Park” – this would be like having a small National Park on the fringe of Manchester.

To protect this resource, foster an understanding of key landscape issues and concerns and to maximise its potential for public use and enjoyment, advice and services are offered that relate to Wildlife, Biodiversity, Sites of Special Scientific Interest and Invasive Weeds.

There is a focus on the protection and enhancement of Trees and Woodlands along with Tree Preservation Orders. General countryside issues are dealt with including the implementation of countryside improvement projects.
