As a Commons Registration Authority, Wigan Council is responsible for maintaining the Registers of Common Land and Village Greens within the Borough as a statutory requirement of the Commons Registration Act 1965.
Each area of common land or village green listed within the register has a unique "unit number", a CL prefix denotes land, whilst a VG prefix denotes a Village Green. The registers are available for public inspection on an appointment basis, which can be arrangement by telephoning any of the numbers below. The Common Land Registers are divided into 3 sections: -
- Section 1 - Land Details
Description of the land, who it was registered by and date the registration became final
- Section 2 - Rights Details
Description of the rights of the land and the name of the person holding the rights
- Section 3 - Ownership
Details of owners of the common land (however entries are not held to be conclusive)
