Owning a listed building does bring extra responsibilities and, often, costs. Financial assistance from English Heritage through the Heritage Lottery Fund and the council, has been concentrated on priority areas which are mainly town centres.
Wigan and Atherton town centres and the Wigan Pier area have benefited and Hindley town centre. However, you may be able to get help from English Heritage for projects elsewhere and it is worth enquiring with the council if you are in difficulty, as we can give advice on assistance that may be available from other sources.
Sometimes, to preserve a listed building, it is necessary to find a new use, since historic buildings ought normally to remain in use rather than be preserved as museum pieces. The council will look positively at proposals for new uses where this would help to preserve them.
