The council is currently reviewing four Leigh Conservation Areas, namely:
- Bridgewater Canal Conservation Area
- Leigh Bridge Conservation Area
- Leigh Town Centre Conservation Area
- Railway Road Conservation Area
A conservation area is an area of special architectural or historic interest, where it is desirable to preserve or enhance the character. Conservation Areas contain buildings of interest, and often possess an important social history, together with their historic, architectural and natural character. These, collectively are considered especially important features and attributes, and contribute positively to the area's special interest.
A Conservation Area Character Appraisal is being prepared for all four Leigh Conservation Areas. The Conservation Area Character Appraisal (CACA) will help residents, businesses and the council to understand the history of an area and why it is special. The Appraisal will define the Conservation Area boundaries and analyse the special architectural and historic interest of the area, providing a detailed analysis of the area's development. It will identify specific features which contribute towards an area's character, such as:
- historic buildings and structures, including those which are locally significant
- important open spaces, including the Bridgewater Canal and its environs
- significant and important views
- natural elements such as trees, green infrastructure and topography
- features which contribute towards making an area locally distinctive
The Conservation Area Character Appraisal will help shape future developments and planning policies.
