Road gullies (grids) are designed to collect surface water from the adopted highways in Wigan. Most gullies are in the road against the kerb edge. You may also see some gullies in the pavement.
In most cases, a blocked gully will be the cause of road flooding and for this reason road and pavement gullies (and those in adopted back streets) are regularly cleaned out.
If you report a blocked gully to the council, we will investigate and if possible deal with the problem at the same time.
Sometimes the gully may appear to be blocked but the problem could be with the pipe into which the gully is connected.
Gullies are usually connected to public sewers which are the responsibility of United Utilities, or to highway drains that are the responsibility of the council.
If the United Utilities public sewer becomes blocked, or in times of heavy storms becomes overfull (surcharged), the gully could appear blocked and have sewage coming out of it. United Utilities are responsible for clearing any blockage in their public sewers and for cleaning up the resultant sewage. If this happens, report it to United Utilities (external link).
