Wigan Pier Quarter Regeneration

The council has produced a revised Planning and Regeneration Strategy for the Wigan Pier Quarter.

The Pier Quarter provides a number of regeneration and development opportunities and is currently undergoing significant change. The strategy provides informal planning guidance and a framework for development and investment over the next few years. Whilst the strategy is currently 'informal' planning guidance, it may be added to the council's formal Local Development Scheme in due course.

Some of the key points of the strategy are:

  • The vision for the area is of a lively, mixed use quarter, providing a home for cultural activities, businesses, leisure and tourism.
  • The plan identifies a number of potential development opportunities, particularly within the area between Trencherfield Mill and the town centre.
  • The document contains a number of guiding principles, which underpin the strategy. These include the need to promote cycling and walking and the importance of creating better physical links between the town centre and the canal.

Wigan Pier Quarter Strategy

The Wigan Pier Quarter has benefited from a multi-million pound regeneration programme, funded by the Heritage Lottery  Fund, The European Regional Development Fund and the Single Regeneration Budget.

This programme has enabled the transformation of the Grade 2 listed Trencherfield Mill and a series of improvements to footpaths and public spaces.
