The Pier Quarter provides a number of regeneration and development opportunities and is currently undergoing significant change. The strategy provides informal planning guidance and a framework for development and investment over the next few years. Whilst the strategy is 'informal' planning guidance in the short term, it may be added to the council's formal Local Development Scheme in due course.
Some of the key points of the strategy are:
- The vision for the area is of a lively, mixed use quarter, providing a home for cultural activities, businesses, leisure and tourism.
- The plan identifies a number of potential development opportunities, particularly within the area between Trencherfield Mill and the town centre.
- The document contains a number of guiding principles, which underpin the strategy. These include the need to promote cycling and walking and the importance of creating better physical links between the town centre and the canal.
