Small photo of the In Bloom award
In Autumn 2006, Wigan celebrated its first success in the Northwest in Bloom competition (see photo, right). The town bagged a runners-up prize at the first attempt and in face of stiff competition from Rochdale, Trafford and Tameside councils.  Learn all about our first entry into the awards here, and find out how you and your community group can get involved in the current year's In Bloom project.

At the Northwest in Bloom ceremony at the Blackpool Hilton Hotel, the prestigious ‘Blooms’ were presented by the Lord Lieutenant of Lancashire Lord Shuttleworth.

Wigan Council’s Cabinet Member for the Environment Cllr David Molyneux told the press:

“To get such recognition at our first go is a great testament to the work of the council’s Street Scene Team, town centre management and our friends in the British Trust for Conservation Volunteers.”

An extensive programme of planting and new floral displays has added to the now regular spring splash of colour from millions of daffodils and crocuses along roadsides and in open spaces. The council has also made sure residents have been involved in the awards’ success.

In congratulating everyone involved Deputy Leader of Wigan Council Cllr John O’Neill added:

“We are working hard to transform Wigan Borough for the benefit of everyone and to attract new visitors and shoppers. Locals have really been positive about how the town has been brightened up.”
